One million jobs would be created, the economy would be developed fast and it would be strengthened so that youths would be able to buy cars when the UNP comes to power said UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe before the election. However, after coming to power Mr. Ranil Wickremesinghe’s government tax even the telephone bill said Information Secretary of the JVP Vijitha Herath.
Speaking at a gathering held at Ambana Junction at Naula yesterday (28th) Mr. Vijitha Herath said, “On 8th January, 2015 a massive change was created in the country. It was the wrong political conduct of the previous administration that brought about this change. Mr. Mahinda Rajapaksa and the group that came to power in 2006 used the advantage the country got after the end of war in 2009 not to develop the country but to develop the family, sons, uncles, brothers and grand mothers. The moment that emerged when the war was ended was a golden opportunity. If this advantage was used as a correct leader the economy of the country could have been developed in many folds and the country could have taken a path towards prosperity.
The SLFP, UNP as well as the JVP members in villages had a great need for a change. We all wanted to defeat the Rajapaksa family bandism that had sent law of the country to the precipice and bring the country on to a correct path.
Then Rohana Dissanayaka, Luxman Wasantha Perera and Janaka Bandara Tennekone were in the SLFP. Aluvihares and Rohini were in the UNP. They never said they would get together to form an alliance government.
We, in the villages, divided into two camps to vote for them. UNP Members thought they could form their government and SLFP members thought of having their own government. In the end we, who fought in two sides, were deceived and they got together to form a government. This is against the mandate. They had given several promises to protect democracy and give media freedom.
Of course, there is little freedom now. Those days if we hold a meeting this late there would have been various obstructions to prevent people from attending the meeting. Now there are no such obstructions and even if they have them we are not scared.
Now ITN channel shows our faces. Those days not only the JVP faces but UNP faces too were not shown. Those days faces of Mahinda, Basil, Namal, Chamal and Shasheendra were shown from morning till night. Not we have a little space in the media.
However, the government ahs not been able to develop the economy despite Ranil saying one million jobs would be created, youths need not love under trees but could love in their own cars.
What has happened now? It is the mobile phone that is used by youths to express their love. Mr. Ranil Wickremesinghe enacted a new tax on phone bills and sabotaged the means of youth love. When Rs.100 is reload Rs.49.73 is deducted as tax. Only Rs.50 is left for the conversation. VAT is 15%, Telecommunication Levy is 25%, CESS is 2% and Nation Building Tax is 2%. The total is 44%. As eh tax is again taxed eh real amount taxes is not Rs.44 for Rs.100 but the real amount taxed is Rs.49.73.
When a Rs.100 card is bought we pay the government Rs.50 as taxes. After promising a car to love the telephone being used has been given a shot. This is what the government did for the one year and few months it has been in power.
Then we were told that the rich man would be taxed to protect the poor. However, the tax of 35% tax for the rich was reduced to 17% by this government. But tax was added for all consumer items including eh cake of soap, light bill, water bill etc. This has been temporarily halted but would commence from November.
The meeting was attended by Matale District JVP Leader Gamagedera Dissanayaka, convener of Organization to Protect Naula People’s Rights R.A.D. Jayatilleke and a large number of residents.
