The attempt by JVP Member Lakshman Nipunarachchi to bring in a resolution stating that depositors of 532 C Sanasa Society at Waththegedera in Maharagama, who have been distressed due to the stealing of Rs.680 million from their accounts by officials of the bank, should be compensated and the Ministry of Cooperatives should be pressurized to punish fraudsters according to the Sanasa regulations was opposed by the members of the ruling party and a vote was taken not to discuss it in the sessions of the Western Provincial Council.
Five members of the PC including the JVP members voted for the resolution while all other members opposed it. As such a debate on the matter could not be taken.
However, the depositors who had come to the Provincial Council encircled the Provincial Council building at Battaramulla. They forced opened the gate and entered the building not allowing members of the PC to go out.
The Chief Minister had to discuss with the depositors and promise them that the society would be taken over by the Department of Cooperatives and an investigation would be carried out regarding the malpractices.
