Deploying customs officers to seal shops of traders who agitated against VAT should be vehemently condemned states the Co-Convenor of the Customs Protection Organization WMRP Wijekone.
Several shops belonging to businessmen, who agitated against VAT imposed by the government, have been sealed on instruction from the Minister of Finance said Mr. Wijekone.
He said customs officers were deployed to seal the shops by an official of the Ministry of Finance who has been appointed as the Acting Director General while the Director General of Customs was abroad.
The move by the Minister of Finance to deploy customs officers to carry out such political revenge should be condemned and added the President and the Prime Minister would be informed about the move.
He said the Minister of Finance and the Director General of Customs should be responsible if the traders take legal action against the move carried out when no crime has been committed under the Customs Ordinance.
