The use of substandard medical equipment in several main hospitals in the country is a serious threat to lives of patients as well as a severe strain on hospital staffs said the General Secretary of All Ceylon Nurses’ Union Mr. Gamini Kumarsinghe.
Speaking at a press conference held yesterday (9th) Mr. Kumarasinghe said his union would hand over a letter to the Secretary to the Ministry of Health asking him to reveal what measures would be taken to rectify this situation.
He said plaster to dress wounds, cannula used for injections, tubes to administer saline and gauze imported from India and China are not up to the required standard.
Mr. Kumarasinghe said the Ministry of Health possesses a group of specialist doctors and scholars to make technical assessment regarding the equipment bought for the Ministry and a question arises whether correct assessments regarding the equipment were not carried out.
He said the Minister and the Deputy Minister should take the responsibility of getting down substandard equipment that threatens lives of patients and inconveniences and stresses the hospital staffs.
