Sunday issue of ‘Rivira’ newspaper in its front page has published that Rs.90 million has been allocated to buy two vehicles for the chairman of the Committee On Public Enterprises (COPE) and the Chairman of Committee on Public Accounts Lasantha Alagiyawanna. When we inquired regarding this Mr. Sunil Handunneththi said he had already rejected getting a vehicle.
Several months ago the Secretary to the Ministry of National Policies and Economic Affairs informed the COPE office in Parliament that a vehicle was allocated for the Chairman of the COPE committee. An official of the Ministry had informed him about this and at the very moment he rejected the vehicle said Mr. Handunneththi.
He had said he didn’t need another vehicle as his party had already made available a vehicle for his use.
When we called the Chairman of the Committee on Public Accounts Deputy Minister Lasantha Alagiyawanna we were told by someone answering his telephone number 0332282400 that he had gone abroad and they were unable to say anything about it. However, Parliamentary sources say Deputy Minister Alagiyawanna had already expressed his willingness to accept the vehicle allocated to him as the Chairman of Committee on Public Accounts.
