Former Minister of Mass Media and Information Keheliya Rambukwella is about to cross over to the government and the UPFA has already approved making him a member of the Maithri – Ranil government state political sources. The investigations carried out by the FCID regarding obtaining money from the President’s fund deceitfully and the Attorney General’ Department too has confirmed that a fraud had been committed. It is said that the immediate cause for Mr. Rambukwella to decide to cross over to the government is this investigation.
Former Minister has obtained Rs. 20 million from the President’s Fund claiming that he had to get treatment for an ailment caused when he fell from the balcony of a third floor of a hotel in Melbourne in February, 2012.Investigtions have revealed that he had had treatment at Epworth Rehabilitation Hospital in Melbourne, Australia.
Also, investigations have revealed that the former Minister met with this accident while he was on a private visit and the hotel where he stayed and met with the accident had paid all his hospital bills.
Former Minister Rambukwella has also been given a large sum of money by his supporters and while all his expenses for the treatment and stay in the hospital had been already paid taking such a large amount of money from the President’s Fund is indeed a deceitful act.
President’s Fund is established to assist the poor who are unable to raise money for treatment of serious illnesses. However, politicians deceitfully get large amounts of money from this fund. This has taken place during the previous regime as well as during the present regime. Normally, a poor patient could get only a limited amount from the fund. However, politicians, with the approval of the President could get large amounts to get treatment abroad. Getting people like Keheliya Rambukwella, who have been charged of serious frauds to join ‘yahapalana’ government is a sign that there is no ‘good governance’ in the Maithri – Ranil regime. Already, investigations in connections with ministers who have been accused of frauds, corruption and crime have been hindered.
