Despite rejecting an official vehicle the first moment that such a vehicle was to be given to him as the Chairman of COPE was announced, attempting to allocate such a vehicle is nothing but an attempt to belittle the COPE says its Chairman, JVP Parliamentarian Sunil Handunneththi.
When the Secretary to the Ministry of National Policies and Economic Affairs informed several months ago that a vehicle was allocated for the Chairman of the COPE and asked what brand of vehicle he would like to have, he had informed that a he wouldn’t want any type of vehicle as he had been already given a vehicle as the JVP Parliamentarian to engage in his Parliamentary affairs.
Despite this he came to know through a Sunday newspaper that funds have been allocated for a vehicle said Mr. Handunneththi.
He said what the COPE needs is not a luxury vehicle that costs the country millions but a sufficient qualified staff, translators and facilities to keep files and documents safely.
Mr. Handunneththi said despite asking for such facilities continuously, nothing has been done so far but the haste in allocating funds for a vehicle is an issue.
At a time when a dialogue should have commenced in the country regarding the COPE report presented recently to the parliament, bringing the issue of a vehicle for the COPE chairman has prevented such a dialogue and it seems there is an attempt to belittle COPE and the Committee on Public Accounts said Mr. Handunneththi and added he would reveal all information in the future.
