Former minister Wimal Weerawansa, who had been avoiding summons by the Presidential Commission of Inquiry to Investigate and Inquire into Serious Acts of Fraud, Corruption and Abuse of Power, State Resources and Privileges (PRECIFAC) on several occasions arrived at the Commission today (4th). He was summoned in connection with the misappropriation of Rs.1 billion in public funds.
According to a PRECIFAC spokesman a statement was to be recorded from Mr. Weerawansa with regard to the fraud and corruption that had taken place in the institutions under his ministry. The Commission had received a complaint alleging that Mr. Weerawansa had given vehicles and fuel from the Engineering Corporation to his personnel staff without following a proper procedure and had given houses and shops to his kith and kin causing a loss of Rs.1 billion to the Government.
When he arrived at the Commission he responded to questions from journalists angrily and when a journalist asked him whether he was angry at being summoned to PRECIFAC he wriggled into the Commission without responding to the journalist.
