The number of marriages in 2013 has gone down by 38% compared to 2012 and the number of marriages in Sri Lanka is going down rapidly states the Registrar General’s Department. This is revealed in its report for 2013.
The government increased the registration fees for marriages to Rs.5000 which severely inconvenienced youths with economic difficulties to tie their wedding knots. This too has been a cause for the fewer number of marriages recorded in the recent past.
Meanwhile, 1,28,552 people have died due to various reasons in 2013. This is an increase of 36% in relation to 2012.
