The people at Rathupaswala area were confronted with an acute water issue due to the release of waste water from a factory in the area producing rubber gloves which contaminated ground water and changed the PH value of ground water. The people carried out an agitation asking for their right for pure water but the government, without finding any solution, deployed the Army and the police to shoot the unarmed agitators. The vicious incident which killed three youths occurred on 1st August, 2013.
The report of the Committee on Public Enterprises (COPE) that was presented to Parliament on the 5th of this month reveals important information regarding this factory.
Among the list of enterprises that did not show any transparency regarding their functions it had been mentioned that the Central Environmental Authority had not carried out a sufficient investigation regarding the rubber glove factory at Rathupaswala and the certificate had been issued by testing only the samples of water supplied by the owner of the factory.
The people in Rathupaswala area filed a case regarding the incidents that occurred at Rathupaswala but they have not got any proper solution for their issue yet.
