The petition filed at Human Rights Commission by those affected challenging the arbitrary move of the Urban Development Authority to demolish 81 shops in Kalutara town was inquired today (12th).
The traders have lost their means of living as the shops were raced to the ground without providing them with an alternative arrangement or paying any compensation.
Attorney at Law and Member of Western Provincial Council Sunil Watagala represented the petitioners.The officials representing the UDA told the Commission that the 81 shops and the postal building nearby were demolished as nefarious activities were going on in the postal building.
The UDA agreed to pay compensation for those who lost their livelihood. The Commission agreed to the request made by the UDA to allow a period of a month to make the payments.
The JVP Member of the Western PC Dr.Nalinda Jayatissa and the shop owners whose shops were demolished were present.
