“The present leader in the country is eagerly waiting to adorn the pair of horns of colonialism” says the Leader of the JVP Somawansa Amarasinghe.
Mr. Amarasinghe made this observation speaking at the 24th commemoration of ‘November Heroes’ held at Matara yesterday (13th) to commemorate heroes and heroines of the JVP who sacrificed their lives during the 87 – 89 struggle. The JVP Leader Somawansa Amarasinghe, its General Secretary Tilvin Silva and Members of the Political Bureau, Central Committee and other organizations of the party were present.
A recital of songs of liberation in commemoration of the fallen heroes and heroines was also held by the Society for Socialist Art.
Speaking further Mr. Amarasinghe said, “Today we commemorate for the 24th time the founder of our party Comrade Rohana Wijeweera, Members of the Political Bureau including Comrades Upatissa Gamanayaka, Shantha Bandara, Comrade Wimalaratna of Trincomalee, all comrades of the Central Committee and other comrades who laid down their lives during the 1987 – 89 period for the independence of the country, freedom, dignity of its people and equality.
When Comrade Rohana Wijeweera and other comrades are commemorated we have to remember two other comrades. Those two comrades left us two days ago. They too should have been here at the commemoration. Comrade Bandula and Comrade Jagath were two comrades of the JVP committee of the Balapitiya electorate. We pay our respects to them.
We had to come to Matara for our commemoration ceremony as we had no space in Colombo, as we’re not given permission to hold our ceremony in Colombo. We were ousted from Colombo to give way for a so-called CHOGM that celebrates colonialism. Not only us, hundreds of thousands of people have been denied their places in Colombo due to Mahinda Rajapaksa’s need to commemorate bondage.
As we were not given room in Colombo we came to Galle. Colonialism is commemorated in Galle as well. As such, we had to come to Matara.
The JVP would not allow anyone to prevent commemoration of heroes and heroines who struggled on behalf of our country in the past against British colonialists as well as against traitors at present. We would commemorate them whatever obstacles are placed against us. November is a dark month where heroes and heroines that struggled against British colonialists were brutally assassinated.
The so-called patriotic leader of this country who is adorned in pseudo anti-imperialist garbs selected this month to invite the successor to the British throne to commemorate colonial rule in this country. Anti-imperialist garbs are adorned to celebrate colonialism. Mahinda Rajapaksa desires to be adorned with the pair of horns of colonialism by the old colonialist. We wouldn’t obstruct this tomfoolery. He gets what he deserves. Now he is attacking our masses without a pair of horns. When he adorns the colonialist pair of horns his attacks on the masses would be severe. People would experience it in a few months time. As such, masses in this country should rally to defeat this colonialist.
Billions of tax money of the people is wasted. A day would come when Rajapaksas would have to answer to the masses. They would not get any leniency then. The JVP, on behalf of the people in this country, would not allow Rajapaksas to go free. In the very near future Rajapaksas will have to pay back to the people the colossal amount of public money being wasted now. The JVP would give leadership to the people to get this money back.
At a time when we have to talk about our beloved Leader Rohana Wijeweera and other comrades we have been forced to talk about other things. However, we would carry out this commemoration with the people in the South. You know the time Comrade Wijeweera took steps to change politics of this country. In 1948 our country was presented with the so-called independence. Subsequently, our country was ruled by a set of local colonialists. Within 5 years the capitalist class displayed its impotency in 1953. The leaders of the capitalist government oppressed the masses. The masses rose against it. The leaders of the government fled in fear. They hid themselves in a ship. It was a marvelous opportunity the masses received. Unfortunately, there was no left movement then that had the backbone to take over the government.
There were no matured, non – opportunistic set of leaders then. 12 years went by but no one came forward to correct the mistake committed in 1953. Comrade Rohana Wijeweera was then 22 years old. Our beloved Leader accepted this challenge. He had only the trust in the people. He worked under extremely severe and trying conditions. He went to the people; made the people aware, organized them and created a massive political party.
Comrade Rohana Wijeweera understood the political changes taking place in the society. He changed politics in the country. These are his leadership qualities. He pioneered in building the only left political party that struggle for the independence of the country and rally thousands of revolutionists around it. He was the only leader whose struggles trembled the capitalist regime. He showed a new path to the country. He armed the masses with proletarian philosophy and tactics. He gave the proletariat a political party.
On 12th November, 1989 he was arrested in the evening and was assassinated at dawn on the 13th. He was reduced to dust and ashes. The enemy feared Comrade Rohana Wijeweera’s still body. Comrade Rohana Wijeweera built the JVP, the revolutionary political party of the country; the political party of the farmer, youth, student and the working masses.
Now it has been proved that the political party he created is not an ordinary political party. A party has been created that can never be destroyed; a party that can raise its head amidst any challenge. He took measures to renew the party despite death hanging over his head. He gave us instructions and taught us even when he was imprisoned. They were great lessons. He was such a great leader. We studied from his teachings and now we continue along the correct path he showed us. As such, Comrade Rohana Wijeweera’s name is eternal. It cannot be burnt to ashes. The JVP is an eternal political party. It is a party that developed comrades who sacrificed their lives for the class, country, unity of all communities and peace. The JVP is the only political party that brought the ruling capitalist class under probation. It is a victory achieved by the downtrodden masses in the country.
The market capitalism has existed in this country for over 35 years. Now it has come to its last stages. A situation has come up that the capitalist system cannot continue. It is so internationally as well. It is a system that is dying. The open economy destroys our country. There is nothing more capitalism can give this country. They could only take from the people. This is a lumpen period.
It is a period when politics, economy and culture have gone to vagabonds. This system should be done away with quickly. A group of local and international vagabonds gobble our economy. The government states CHOGM would bring in investors. Who these investors are should be revealed without deceiving masses. They would bring casino and gambling. The business forum is addressed by a casi
no king. Instead of development the economy would be destroyed. Who is this Packer? They deal with the international mafia. Those so-called leftists in the government put up their hands for casino. They say casino is good if taxes can be levied. S.B. Dissanayake, the Minister of Higher Education, says he too has played casino and it is not harmful. Do people have to eat grass just because SB does so? Even the big man should be given grass to eat. He is waiting to adorn a pair of colonial horns. Despite thinking he would have the world under him, the commonwealth can do nothing. What could the royal family do? Rajapaksa family too is waiting to reign. Do they think they can go on horse carriages? Casinos are places where racketeers, thieves and plunderers dwell. They would be a threat to our country. This country is being made a casino den. Then the administrators, politics and the media will be controlled by casino owners – like senators in the USA. They could take decisions to carry out political assassinations. Those who fight for the dignity, independence and sovereignty of the country could be removed or murdered.
As such, we should develop in us the determination Comrade Rohana Wijeweera had. However, we do not have to go through the suffering he went through. For the party has spread out from Dondra Point to Point Pedro. The party has been developed with tremendous sacrifices. Hence, this message should be taken to the every nook and corner of the country.
Now Mahinda Rajapaksa is giving us a message. There is an attempt to pressurize masses, destroy education and slash employment opportunities. Youths in our country are left with drug peddling and prostitution. Masses are not happy. Rajapaksas cannot make people happy. This is a government of the lumpens.
There aren’t many sides to be toppled. The two sides are very clear. They are the side of democracy, welfare and morality and the side of lumpens. We call upon the masses to understand this difference and change accordingly. Rajapaksa cannot take the country any further. Now, not only the JVP, but even those who didn’t talk about it are talking. They see the destruction. Already, soil too has been sold. Plans have been prepared to sell all resources. Nothing can be expected from the next budget. This vagabondish system should be eliminated. It could be stopped and defeated. We have that capability. The industrialists, businessmen and farmers of this country have been denied their place. They should take back their place. All should rally with one goal. A vanguard for struggle should be formed. We must struggle and stop this country being made a den of vice. We appeal to the masses of this country to organize themselves; walk the path taken by Comrade Rohana Wijeweera and rally under his flag.
