The government is urging fishermen to use fishing gear that could catch only small fish and it would drag down the fisher folk from the pan to the hearth says the National Organizer of All Ceylon Fishermen’s Federation Ratna Gamage.
The Ministry of Fisheries and Aquatic Resource Development has sent letters to District Secretaries asking them to provide fishing gear relief only to fishermen who use nets to catch small fish states Mr. Ratna Gamage.
The fishing industry would fall into deep crisis due to the removal from usage of fishing gear that is used to catch big fish such as tuna said Mr. Gamage adding fishermen could make their ends meet only by catching big fish.
The National Organizer of the All Ceylon Fishermen’s Federation said the local fishermen are discouraged from using equipment for big fish in a crafty manner to allow foreign companies to harvest the big fish in the ocean around Sri Lanka. He pointed out that already foreign companies, specially from China, are engaged in fishing in our waters and the local fisher folk are chased away from their traditional fishing areas.
Mr. Ratna Gamage said the fishermen are losing patience due to the crisis they are confronted with and his organization would rally fisher folk for a massive agitation to demand the government to withdraw unjust limitations on fisher folk.
