The internal crisis in the UNP has taken a new turn with the decision taken to suspend UNP Matara District parliamentarian Buddhika Pathirana and Western Provincial Councilor Shiral Lakthilleka. UNP Deputy Leader Karu Jayasuriya objecting to the move has said that it was not the proper time to take action against party members when the entire party needed to stand against the government.
Sajith Premadasa speaking to the media has said that he was not informed about the decision although he was a deputy leader of the party adding that both Pathirana and Lakthilleke acted tirelessly at all time to ensure victory to the United National Party.
A protest was staged yesterday in front of ‘Sirikotha,’ the party headquarters, against the decision to suspend the two counselors. According to UNP similar agitations will be conducted throughout the island. Many members of the UNP say the party was subjected to defeats in almost all elections held in the recent past as a result of stubborn decisions of the party leadership.
