Defense Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa has decided to use army personnel to keep tabs on politicians while the President has appointed Minister Basil Rajapaksa to coordinate all social and political activities in the Kolonnawa electorate.
Quoting increased criminal activities by thugs backed by politicians the Defense Secretary states it is necessary to get tough with certain VIPs and all VIP’s including politicians will be given new guidelines on the number of security personnel and vehicles that will comprise their security detail and the number of weapons to be carried.
According to the Defense Secretary the Army will be deployed to check whether the guidelines are being followed and those who fail to do so will be duly “dealt with irrespective of their status.” The Defense Secretary says criminals had made it a habit to back politicians belonging to the party in office and this had happened even at the time the United National Party (UNP) was in office.
Meanwhile, President Mahinda Rajapakse has appointed Minister Basil Rajapaksa as the coordinator of the SLFP for Kolonnawa. He is the SLFP organizer for Gampaha District as well.
