While there is an acute shortage of doctors in hospitals in Sri Lanka about 10,000 Sri Lankan doctors are serving in various countries of the world says the Minister of Health Maithripala Sirisena. He says despite having their medical education in Sri Lanka these doctors serve other countries and added that 2500 Sri Lankan doctors serve in the UK, 1500 in Australia, 3750 in the US and others in several other countries.
The Minister of Health said only about 16000 doctors serve in hospitals in Sri Lanka but 47hospitals and medical institutions have been closed down here due to lack of doctors he pointed out.
Speaking at a ceremony held recently the Minister of Health invited all doctors serving in foreign countries to come back to the Motherland and serve the people who had spent for their education. He also appealed to the families of such doctors to encourage their family members who serve as doctors in foreign countries to come back to Sri Lanka.
However, Mr. Sirisena’s government has not created a favourable environment for domiciled doctors to come back state several doctors speaking to ‘Lankatruth.’ They say eh government follows a policy of privatizing everything including the medical sector in the country and as a result many government hospitals are on the verge of being closed down for lack of staff, medicine and other facilities.
