It is reported that tests carried out on the stretch from Kottawa to Dodangoda of southern highway by a special machine imported by the Road Development Authority (RDA) has revealed that the carpeted surface is not up to the standard expected of a high speed road. As a result more than 8000 meters of the road has to be re-laid say these reports. This stretch has been laid by China Harbour Engineering Co Ltd.
The engineers say if not for the tests carried out by the imported machine, the substandard surface of the road wouldn’t have been noticed and added that even if the stretch is newly laid it would not be possible to determine how long it would last.
The engineers also suspect that the layer of soil laid by the company under the carpeted surface too is not up to standard.
Two Japanese companies are constructing 66 kilo meters of the road from Dodangoda to Galle and only about 200 meters of substandard surface material has to be removed from this stretch.
It is also reported that recovering the cost of relaying of the surface from the Chinese company has not been sorted out yet. The total cost of the construction of the road is said to be Rs. 90 billion.
