Sirisena squabbles with Chamal to sell water

A cabinet paper presented to the cabinet by Minister of Irrigation and Water Management Chamal Rajapakse to market water and was approved has been opposed by  Minister of Agricultural Development & Agrarian Services Development Maithripala Sirisena.

Minister Sirisena has presented a cabinet paper no. 55/2008 opposing the cabinet paper presented by Minister Rajapakse on 04.07.2008. Minister Sirisena has opposed the cabinet paper presented by Minister Rajapakse stating that water management affairs come under the purview of his ministry.

Several political parties and mass organizations have opposed the attempt of the government to market water resources in the island. Many patriotic organizations have indicated that the government has been attempting to sell water resources in the country.
