The
UNP will take the initiative to build an alliance of political
parties and mass organizations to demand the government to
implement the 17th amendment to the Constitution said Secretary
General of the UNP Tissa Aattanayake.
Speaking at a media meeting held in Colombo yesterday (4th) Mr.
Attanayake said UNP Leader Ranil Wickremasinghe has been
authorized by the party to hold discussions with political
parties and other mass organizations regarding the formation of
the alliance.
Mr. Attanayake said commissions including the police, government
services, election, and judicial commissions have been made
inactive and democracy has been weakened and threatened due to
the failure to establish the Constitutional Council proposed in
the 17th amendment.
The proposed alliance would be established very soon said Mr.
Attanayake and through this alliance campaigns to demand the
government to implement the 17th amendment would be carried out
in the parliament and outside it added the Secretary General of
the UNP.
